Historic,

THE INVENTOR :

Volleyball was invented in 1895 by YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association) physical fitness director William G.  Morgan, in Holyoke (Massachusetts). The original name of VB was « mintonette ».

William G. Morgan was born in Lockport in 1870 (State of New York).

He meet James Naismith (who, in 1891, had invented basketball) during undergraduate studies at the Springfield College.

He became Director of Physical Education at Holyoke YMCA.

In this role he had the opportunity to develop a vast programme of exercises and sports classes.

In 1895, he decided to blend elements of basketball, baseball, tennis an hadball to create a new game for his classes wich would demand less physical contact than the other sports. So he created the « mintonnette » now call « Volleyball ».

During a demonstration game, someone remarked that the players seemed to be volleyinf the ball back and forth over the net. This is probably the descriptive name for the sport.

William G. Morgan died in 1942,  until his death its in Glenwood cemetary.
